Everyone has a different view of an exceptional person. There're many things help to make a person exceptional. Academic brilliance like Einstein, emotional intelligence like poets, being creative and practical. All of them are factors help to make a person exceptional. On the other hand, some people consider they're exceptional because of their richness, fame, gait and style. It isn't necessary to be an exceptional person because of good attitudes, abilities and talents. Sometimes bad things make a person exceptional. For example, the Mafia is a bad organisation for two centuries but it's exceptional since it started until now. In my opinion, academic brilliance makes a person exceptional more than other things.
In my point of view, everyone is an exceptional person. Everyone has special features and abilities. Einstein was an exceptional person because of his theories and inventions. Obama is an exceptional person too because of his policy in ruling the USA. You're also an exceptional person because you've an extraodinary character and a lot of abilities that I haven't yet recognise.
I am unsure about the mafia link but I do agree with your comment about us all having innate abilities that we have yet to recognise. Imagine if we used our full capacity what we would all be capable of achieving!

Maybe I will start to give brain gym exercises at the beginning of every class so we can expand our capacity!
