A person who is exceptional in my mind needs not to be very clever or wealthy or good-looking. All she needs is bravery to confront her adversity in life. Helen Adams Keller is a good example. She became deaf and blind because of meningitis when she was 19 months old. At the age of seven, she received help from a visually impaired lady as an instructor, Anne Sullivan. Anne taught Helen by spelling words on her palm. Since then, Helen grew eager to learn more. Beginning in 1888, she attended special institutes for the blind and the deaf. Later, she went to normal school. In 1904, she finally graduated from Radcliffe College as the first deaf and blind person who earned a Bachelor Degree of Art. After that, she even got a few job, including an author, a political activist and a lecturer. It is nearly impossible for normal people like us to understand how Helen overcame such handicaps. Being blind and deaf, which causes mute together, Helen must have faced a great barrier of communication and learning. However, she not only managed to lead a normal life, but also became an important person in society and contributed to other people.
Even seriously handicapped Helen Keller could make such an amazing achievement. As physically normal people, we have advantages; therefore we should be grateful and work hard.
A prime example of someone whose life is deemed exceptional in the opinion of many. Can you think of anyone in this era who has overcome similar adversity?
